Progressive Insurance Responds to JIDF: Takes "Necessary Action" to adjust their ad strategy on Facebook

Email to JIDF:

Thank you for your recent letter about our online advertising. We appreciate your taking time to share your concerns with us.

It is never our intention to advertise Progressive products and services on Web sites and other social media outlets that may potentially offend others. Our core values as a company reflect mutual respect and good will and we run our business and operate in the marketplace with this as our guiding principle.

Because of the extraordinary expanse of the online world, we use third-party advertising networks that purchase ad inventory across many different sites. We take advantage of targeting technology as much as possible to better reach potential customers, but that technology isn’t always available or isn’t fail-proof. As a result, we very occasionally appear on Web sites and search results that may be seen as objectionable.

We sincerely regret that this is one of those times and we apologize for offending you with this placement of our advertising.

Please know that we have taken necessary action to insure our advertising never appears within the pages of an offensive group on Facebook. Currently, however, there is no technical way to block ads from appearing in Facebook search results.
(JIDF: One way to prevent ads from appearing from Facebook search results would be to not advertise on the platform in the first place!)
Our online advertising team is continually working with our media vendors to better identify and monitor Web content and the placement of our ads, and we thank you for bringing this to our attention. Our goal is to proactively prevent this sort of ad placement in the future.
