German Press Tours New Hitler Youth: Quran Summer Camps in Gaza

Members of the German press were given tours of Gaza's Quranic Summer Camps on Monday, under the supervision of the Ministry of Awqaf (religious endowments), officials told Ma'an.

At the request of the journalists, a tour of the summer programs was arranged in Gaza City, and the group was briefed on the daily programs of the camps, including (brainwashing) techniques used to help children memorize the Quran.

Journalists were also shown around facilities where children were taught the basics of self defense, and sports training facilities also used by the camps.

The government-run programs are often seen as rivals of the UNRWA summer activities for kids in Gaza. In an apparent sign of an intensifying rivalry, two of the UN sites were torched over the past two months, by what witnesses described as Hamas-affiliated thugs.

With limited options for summer programs in the coastal enclave, the divide between religious and secular programs splits camp options. The Gaza government and UNRWA are the largest supporters of summer camps in the area. -Ma'an
